In this lesson you are going to learn these ten words using the interactive exercise system that forms the foundation of the course. Take some time to familiarise yourself with this system because it is used extensively throughout the course and your progress will hinge on you using it correctly.
Start the first exercise by clicking on the link below. Then make sure you read all the hints that appear at the bottom of the screen - they explain exactly what you need to do.
Make sure you read all the hints that appear at the bottom of the exercise screen.
There are two main types of exercises used in this course: listening exercises and speaking exercises. Exercise 1.1 was a listening exercise - you had to listen to an Italian word and then translate it into English. Exercise 1.2 is a speaking exercise. It contains the same ten words that you learnt in exercise 1.1, but this time you’ll have to translate them from English into Italian and say the Italian words out loud. It’s important to say all the Italian words out loud in order to start developing your Italian pronunciation. In later lessons we will cover many spelling and pronunciation topics explicitly, but for the time being just do your best to reproduce the sounds that you hear in the recordings. Don’t be too concerned if you can’t get the pronunciations exactly right just yet, but do listen carefully to the recordings and do your best.
This is the end of the first lesson. By now you should know ten Italian words and you should be comfortable using the exercise system. At this point you might like to disable the hints that appear on the exercise screen - you can do this from the Settings menu on the left (registered members only).
