Like the indefinite article (a), the definite article (the) is different for masculine and feminine nouns (il telefono, la casa).

The word ecco is a special word that doesn’t fit well into the traditional grammatical categories. It means something like here is, there is, here are or there are, but it isn’t actually a verb. It is often associated with some sort of physical action, like handing over an item (ecco il telefono, here’s the phone) or pointing at something nearby (ecco la casa, there’s the house).
