You should be starting to notice some patterns in the endings of verbs. For example the first person singular verb forms, like vado, I go, sento, I hear, and trovo, I find, all end in -o. Some of the verbs you’ve learnt are regular, meaning that they follow a precise pattern. For example sentire, to hear, is completely regular with verb forms like sento, senti and sente. Other verbs are irregular, meaning that they don’t follow the normal patterns entirely. This is the case, for example, with the verb andare, to go, that has irregular forms vado, vai and va. Most verbs in Italian are regular, but the most common verbs tend to be irregular, so you’ll find at first that you seem to be learning a lot of irregular forms. Don’t worry, there are really only a handful of verbs that have a lot of irregular forms and once you’ve learnt those, all the remaining verbs will be relatively easy.

Some common prepositions, like a, when followed by a definite article, like il, combine together with that article to form a single word. So vado a il negozio becomes vado al negozio, and vieni a la scuola becomes vieni alla scuola.

The verb portare, to carry, is a very common word that can also mean bring or take when you’re talking about moving things (or people or animals) from one place to another. It’s the best verb to use for saying things like take this book with you, or could you bring me a beer.
