This is a list of country names. In selecting countries to be included in the list and in ordering the list I’ve taken into account the following factors:
- Proximity and relevance to Italy.
- Likely relevance for native speakers of English.
- Size of the country’s economy.
- I’ve tried to group neighbouring countries together to make them easier to learn (for those who know their geography).
Beyond these factors I’ve done my best to avoid showing any preference for any particular country. If the list is biased in any way, it’s completely unintentional.
The Definite Article with Country Names
In both the Italian and the English, the definite article has been included for those country names that are normally used with the definite article. Note that in Italian most country names are normally used with the definite article while in English most are not.
