Survival Phrases 1 - Basic Pleasantries

In this first lesson we’ll start with some basic pleasantries and other essential expressions that no traveller should be without. Even if you don’t plan to converse with any Italians you should know how to say yes, no, please, thank you and the most essential of all: sorry. You can click on the buttons in the table below to hear recordings of the phrases, but don’t worry about memorizing them - that’s what the exercises are for.

If you don’t hear any sound when you press the buttons, click here for some suggestions.

Exercises

The following exercises will help you to learn (and remember!) all the above phrases. Every lesson has a listening exercise and a speaking exercise. Most people find it easier to do the listening exercise before the speaking exercise, so we’ve presented them in that order, but feel free to do them the other way around if you prefer.

Be sure to read the instructions, which will appear as a series of hints at the bottom of the exercise screen.
