Survival Phrases 2 - Do you speak English?

In this lesson you’ll learn how to say I don’t speak Italian, Do you speak English? and some other related phrases. If your Italian isn’t good enough to achieve anything else then at least you’ll be able to find someone who speaks English. Remember, there’s no need to try to memorize any of these phrases yet - you’ll do that in the exercises below.

Non parlo italiano.

I don't speak Italian.

Non parlo bene italiano.

I don't speak Italian well.

Parla inglese?

Do you speak English?

C'è qualcuno che parla inglese?

Is there anyone who speaks English?

Può parlare più lentamente?

Can you speak more slowly?

Prego?

Pardon/Sorry? (when you don't understand what was said)

Può ripetere?

Can you repeat that?

Capisco.

I understand.

Non capisco.

I don't understand.

Capisce?

Do you understand?

Non capisco l'italiano.

I don't understand Italian.

Capisce l'inglese?

Do you understand English?

Key Concepts

Some lessons have a Key Concepts section that explains some essential elements of Italian grammar. The key concepts from this lesson are:

  • Italian verbs have different endings (eg. parlo, I speak, parla, you speak) that indicate who is performing the action represented by the verb.

  • You can turn any statement into a question simply by raising your voice at the end (or by adding a question mark when writing). The word order does not normally change as it does in English.
