Key Concepts

  • You might have noticed that some words have alternative endings, indicated with parentheses (eg. sono ferito(a)). When using an adjective (like ferito) to describe a person, you often have to change the ending of the word depending on whether you’re talking about a man or a woman. In this case, ferito (ending with an o) is used for a man and ferita (ending with an a) is used for a woman.

With the phrase sono ferito, I’m injured, you’re talking about yourself, so if you are a man you would say sono ferito, but if you’re a woman you would say sono ferita. Whenever the ending of a word changes like this based on the gender of the person it refers to, we will indicate the feminine version using parentheses.
